Key Background
The UAE Cabinet has spearheaded a wholesale overhaul of the Gender Balance Council, a clear indication of a greater commitment to gender balance across the nation. The Council will subsequently be led directly by the Cabinet with enhanced mandate and keen interest in policy implementation. Spearheading the transformation is Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose appointment is an acknowledgement of ten years of efforts towards empowering women and social advancement.
Some of the Council’s new function will be to develop gender-based legislation and regulations, evaluate them from a national point of view, and make sure they are on an international level. This strategic vision is customized for cementing the status of the UAE as being among the world’s top-ranked countries on the global lists for gender equality. The Council will be proactively engaged in reviewing laws, leading public-private initiatives, and initiating focused programs to propel parity across all areas.
Piecemeal from its nonsupervisory part, the Council is now also responsible for setting up public databases, relative studies, and collaboration with global associations with the end of perfecting gender balance. Emphasizing substantiation- grounded decision- making as well as global outreach is reflective of the UAE’s forward- looking strategy in bridging the gender gap. It also shows the country’s vision in creating a more diversified, inclusive, and sustainable unborn labor request.
The re-launched Council has the most experienced government members in finance, economy, foreign affairs, cabinet affairs, human resources, statistics, and social development. Mona Ghanem Al Marri has also been named Vice President with a strong academic background in strategic communication, and gender advocacy. This inter-disciplinary environment assures the dedication of a whole-of-government to mainstreaming “gender balance” in national policy and institutional culture.
This reordering is another milestone on the UAE path towards inclusive governance, signaling that gender equality is not only a desired social concept but also an economic growth platform and a national identity.
