Background:

Jordan and Lebanon have strengthened their economic and diplomatic ties by signing 21 cooperation agreements in areas such as energy, industry, electrical connections, trade, investment, tourism, transport, and public services.

The agreements were signed at the eighth session of the Jordanian-Lebanese Joint Higher Committee in Beirut, with Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam in attendance.

Prime Minister Hassan said Jordan will continue to support Lebanon’s security and stability, and that the agreements show the strong and long-standing ties between the two countries. “Supporting Lebanon is a firm Jordanian position under the guidance of His Majesty King Abdullah II,” Hassan said, adding that the aim is to translate historic relations into comprehensive cooperation across all fields.

The two nations, despite not sharing a direct border, maintain close connections through decades of economic, cultural, and social interaction, Hassan noted. He said the new agreements are the next step in cooperation and will involve closer work between institutions to help both countries.

The agreements also highlight the need for regular communication and coordination among ministers, officials, and technical teams to ensure they are put into action and to explore new areas of cooperation.

Trade data shows a strong economic relationship between Jordan and Lebanon. In 2023, Jordan exported $101 million worth of goods to Lebanon, while Lebanon exported $111 million to Jordan.

Both countries want to strengthen their economic, cultural, and technical ties to increase trade, investment, and development.

Experts say the agreements show that Jordan and Lebanon are building strong economic ties, even without a shared border.

They also create opportunities for more trade, technology sharing, and tourism.
